Introduction to the Digestive System

  • Definition: The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into smaller components that can be absorbed and utilized by the body.
  • Key Functions:
    1. Ingestion: Intake of food.
    2. Digestion: Mechanical and chemical breakdown of food.
    3. Absorption: Nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream or lymph.
    4. Egestion: Elimination of undigested food and waste.

Anatomy of the Human Digestive System

The digestive system consists of two main components:

  1. Alimentary Canal:

    • A continuous tube extending from the mouth to the anus.
    • Organs: Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus.
  2. Associated Glands:

    • Organs that produce enzymes and other substances to aid digestion.
    • Examples: Salivary glands, liver, pancreas.

Parts of the Digestive System

  1. Mouth:

    • Function:
      • Ingestion of food.
      • Mechanical digestion (chewing by teeth).
      • Chemical digestion (saliva contains the enzyme salivary amylase that begins carbohydrate digestion).
    • Structures:
      • Teeth: Break food into smaller pieces.
      • Tongue: Mixes food with saliva and aids in swallowing.
  2. Pharynx and Esophagus:

    • Pharynx:
      • Connects the mouth to the esophagus.
      • Shared pathway for food and air.
    • Esophagus:
      • Muscular tube that transports food from the pharynx to the stomach.
      • Uses peristalsis (wave-like muscle contractions) for movement.
  3. Stomach:

    • A muscular, J-shaped organ.
    • Functions:
      • Temporary storage of food.
      • Mechanical digestion: Churning action mixes food with gastric juices.
      • Chemical digestion: Gastric juice contains:
        • Hydrochloric acid (HCl): Creates an acidic environment (pH ~2).
        • Pepsin: Begins protein digestion.

  1. Structure:

Process of Digestion

  1. Mechanical Digestion:

    • Breakdown of food into smaller pieces (e.g., chewing, churning in the stomach).
  2. Chemical Digestion:

    • Breakdown of macromolecules into their monomers using enzymes:

Villi and Microvilli in the Small Intestine

    • Villi are small, finger-like projections in the lining of the small intestine.
    • Microvilli are even smaller projections on the surface of villi.
  2. Function:

    • Increase surface area for maximum absorption of nutrients.
    • Each villus contains blood capillaries and a lacteal (lymph vessel) for transporting absorbed substances.

Hormonal Regulation of Digestion

  1. Gastrin:

    • Secreted by the stomach.
    • Stimulates the secretion of gastric acid (HCl).
  2. Secretin:

    • Released by the duodenum.
    • Stimulates the pancreas to release bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid.
  3. Cholecystokinin (CCK):

    • Secreted by the small intestine.
    • Stimulates the gallbladder to release bile and the pancreas to secrete enzymes.
  4. Insulin and Glucagon:

    • Secreted by the pancreas.
    • Regulate blood glucose levels.

Disorders of the Digestive System

  1. Acid Reflux (GERD):

    • Cause: Backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus.
    • Symptoms: Heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain.
    • Prevention/Treatment: Avoid spicy foods, antacids, lifestyle changes.
  2. Peptic Ulcers:

    • Cause: Erosion of the stomach or duodenal lining, often due to Helicobacter pylori infection or overuse of NSAIDs.
    • Symptoms: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
    • Prevention/Treatment: Antibiotics, acid suppressants, avoiding alcohol and smoking.
  3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):

    • Cause: Exact cause unknown; triggered by stress, diet, or hormonal changes.
    • Symptoms: Abdominal cramps, bloating, diarrhea, constipation.
    • Prevention/Treatment: Dietary changes, stress management, medications.
  4. Constipation:

    • Cause: Lack of dietary fiber, inadequate water intake, sedentary lifestyle.
    • Symptoms: Difficulty in passing stools, abdominal discomfort.
    • Prevention/Treatment: High-fiber diet, hydration, exercise.
  5. Diarrhea:

    • Cause: Viral or bacterial infection, food intolerance, medication side effects.
    • Symptoms: Loose, watery stools, dehydration.
    • Prevention/Treatment: Hydration, oral rehydration salts (ORS), probiotics.
  6. Gallstones:

    • Cause: Crystallization of bile components in the gallbladder.
